Have you ever wanted to capture your own cultural and culinary experiences?
Writers Retreat Tuscany
with Gina Rae La Cerva
There is so much more to food than simply eating. We tell our stories, make memories, and share precious parts of ourselves and our lives over meals.
Join us in the wild part of Tuscany for a creative writing retreat for eaters, authors, and everyone in between. Find inspiration and embark on a mouth-watering culinary and writing adventure, discovering the unique flavors and traditions of the wild part of Tuscany.
Led by award-winning writer and environmental anthropologist, Gina Rae La Cerva (@ginas_deli), this retreat covers techniques for writing about food in a way that captures its essence and appeals to readers.
This gathering is designed for those ready to explore a more sustainable way of operating. By aligning your work with regenerative principles, you’ll actively contribute to a flourishing future for both your workplace and the planet.

What We’ll Do

In this week-long retreat, we will learn the art of the gastronomic memoir, explore personal stories of our own through food writing, and deepen our connection to our ancestors, bodies, and nature. Through group and individual writing exercises, we will tap into our creativity and illuminate deeper truths about ourselves. We’ll use the subject of food as a starting point to explore our inner worlds, access deep memories, connect to our childhoods, examine our heritage, and reflect on our personal growth. We’ll examine the craft of writing about food, highlighting the tools needed to create stellar food writing including ingredients, timing, temperature, the essential components of using sensory details to inform and inspire.

Where we will be

The retreat will take place in the wild part of Tuscany, at Tertulia, a restored Italian farmhouse from the 1700s, nestled in the Mugello forest. Tertulia is rooted in permaculture principles, so along with food writing we will also get to go foraging in the forest, visit local markets, take a cooking class together, and have an optional morning practice of yoga and meditation.

Who should come along

All levels of experience are welcome, so long as you arrive with an open mind (and a curiosity for Italian food and culture)! There will be time to share our work and offer feedback as a group, as well as lots of time for your own generative work—using our writing as a means to explore all the ways we do and don’t nourish ourselves. Whether you want to write a restaurant review, a reflection on your favorite food memory, or the life history of a family recipe, get ready to cook up some piquant prose. You will connect with the land and local community, and meet people from around the world.
